Household Survey
In june 2003 the Central Survey Unit of the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) was commissioned to carry out a survey on behalf of the Northern Ireland Policing Board and District Policing Partnerships (DPPs). this postal survey involved questionnaires being sent to just over 60,000 households across Northern Ireland (NI) selected at random from the Valuation and Lands Agency list of addresses. The DPP survey replaces the survey on policing issues that would normally have been carried out by the PSNI District Commander.
Armagh DPP has a statutory responsibility to monitor police performance in the district to ensure that the PSNI is effective and efficient. The DPP Oublic Consusltation Survey was the first Northern Ireland-wide survey on policing that also allowed the responses to be broken down into the 26 district council areas to give a local perspective.
The survey findings have assisted Armagh District DPP to identify local policing priorities contained in the Local Policing Plan for the area.
When asked to select the five most important policing issues in their area the survey found that in Armgh the following issues were of main concern:
- Domestic burglary (65%)
- Underage drinking (51%)
- Speeding (48%)
- Attacks on the elderly (47%)
- Young people causing a nuisance (37%)
Focus Group Consultation
Following on from the postal survey Armagh DPP carried out focus group work with local people to further investigate the policing matters which were important to them.
Six focus groups were conducted in Armagh. The priorities identified from this secondary consultation are:
- Underage drinking and anti-social behaviour
- Drugs
- Paramilitary activity and organised crime
- Sectarian Tension
- Domestic Burglary
- Attacks on the elderly
