Consulting the local community
One of the main roles and responsibilities of Coleraine District Policing Partnership is the requirement to undertake a community survey to identify the views of the public concerning the policing in the district. This information is then used to aid the DPP in their identification of key policing issues and priorities for discussion with the District Commander in the formation of the Local Policing Plan.
Coleraine DPP held a number of consultations to gather information from the public on the issues that they were most concerned about. As well as using the NISRA household survey from 2008, the DPP carried out a number of focus groups and analysed the questions that are asked at public meetings.
The final issues that the DPP identified through the consultation are:
- Anti-social behaviour – specifically underage drinking,
- Road traffic offences,
- Drugs,
- Violent crime,
- Community/neighbourhood policing – especially ensuring that Neighbourhood police are not (as far as possible) taken away for other duties,
- Increased confidence in policing – specifically relating to the PSNI providing feedback to people who report a crime and victims of crimes,
- Domestic abuse,
- Hate crime,
- Domestic burglary and theft.
