Welcome to Cookstown DPP

Cookstown District Policing Partnership (DPP) is a partnership between Cookstown District Council and representatives of the local community, which was established on 4 March 2003 under the auspices of the Police (Northern Ireland) Act 2000.  

The Partnership is made up of both members of the local community and locally elected political representatives who are elected to serve on Cookstown District Council.  The partnership has a membership of 15, the size of which was determined by Cookstown District Council.  As every DPP must have one more political representative on the partnership, Cookstown DPP is made up of 8 councillors and 7 independent members, appointed from the local community.

Part 3, Section 16 of the Police (Northern Ireland) Act 2000 details the functions of Cookstown DPP:

• To provide views to the District Commander on the policing of the District,
• To monitor the performance of the police in delivering the local policing plan,
• To consult the public on the policing of the district,
• To obtain the co-operation of the public in preventing crime, and
• To act as a forum for discussion on matters affecting the policing of the district.

The area covered by the DPP is the same as that covered by Cookstown District Council and Cookstown District Command Unit of the Police Service of Northern Ireland.  

DISTRICT PROFILE

Cookstown and District covers an area of almost 378 sq. km with an approximate population of 32,500.  Cookstown town with a population of approximately 12,000 is the principal administrative and commercial centre for the district and serves a further 4,500 people who reside in the villages of Coagh, Pomeroy, Stewartstown and Moneymore.

The district is centrally located within Northern Ireland and brings together a variety of landscapes, which have been described as places of outstanding natural beauty.  That description encapsulates a panoramic and picturesque contrast of the Sperrin Mountains in the west with the flat lands on the shores of Lough Neagh in the east.  Between these contrasting features lies the historic market town of Cookstown.  

Places of historic and tourist interest within the area covered by the District Policing Partnership include the National Trust property of Springhill House at Moneymore, the ruins of a 10th century abbey and stone Celtic cross at Ardboe, Killymoon Castle in Cookstown and the National Trust property of Wellbrook Bettling Mill.
