Q. What is a District Policing Partnership?
District Policing Partnerships were established under the Police (Northern Ireland) Act 2000 to:-
- provide views to the District Commander on the policing of the District,
- monitor the performance of the police in delivering the local policing plan,
- consult the public on the policing of the district,
- obtain the co-operation of the public in preventing crime, and
- act as a forum for discussion on matters affecting the policing of the district.
The area covered by the DPP is the same as that covered by Cookstown District Council and Cookstown District Command Unit of the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
Q. Can I contact a Member of the DPP to express my views on local policing?
Any Member of the public wishing to speak to a Member of the District Policing Partnership can do so by contacting the District Policing Partnership Manager in the first instance. The Manager will take your details and pass them to the Member you are wishing to contact, who will in due course make arrangements to speak with you.
Q. How long do Members serve on the District Policing Partnership?
Members are appointed by both the District Council and the Northern Ireland Policing Board, to serve for a period of time which coincides with the term of office of the Cookstown District Council. This is four years. The current Membership will serve until June 2005, upon wish time a recruitment campaign for new Members will be undertaken.
Q. How can I make my views known on the policing of the District?
The District Policing Partnership undertakes a consultation process once a year on the compilation of local policing plans for the incoming year. If you have views to express on the policing of the district you may wish to feed into this process. The Manager can inform you of the consultation process being undertaken in any one year.
You may however wish to submit your views in writing to be discussed at a meeting of the District Policing Partnership. In this instance you should forward all correspondence to the Manager at the District Policing Partnership office, Council Offices, Burn Road, Cookstown, BT80 8DT. Should you wish a written response your address and other contact details must be included.
Q. How do I contact my local Neighbourhood Policing Team?
Cookstown District Command Unit has 5 Neighbourhood Policing Teams located throughout the district, in Pomeroy, Stewratstown, Coagh, Moneymore and Cookstown. An officer of your local Neighbourhood Policing Team may be contacted by contacting Cookstown Police Station on (028) 8676 6000 in the first instance.
Q. How can I engage and consult with local police officers on issues within my locality?
Cookstown District Policing Partnership, with the assistance of the NI Policing Board financially assists a number of consultative forums to meet and discuss issues of crime and ways of tackling it with local community police officers who serve their area. If you wish to attend and be part of such a local consultative forum the Manager can inform you of the group nearest to were you live. The Manger can be contacted on (028) 8676 2205.
