A significant responsibility of the DPP is to gain the co-operation of a wide cross section of the public with the police in preventing crime. This involves recognising policing in its widest context, consulting non-governmental organisations and community groups as well as statutory agencies. The wide consultation process already undertaken by the DPP also plays a very useful role in identifying the concerns of the public and the police and looking at ways in which they could be addressed.
Following on from this it is vital that a close working relationship is developed with the local crime prevention officers. This enables closer consideration being given as to how the DPP can help to spread the crime prevention message and influence the general public.
It is evident that the DPP has a very important role to play in raising awareness and developing initiatives that gain the public’s confidence and co-operation. This is a role which is still very much in the developmental stage. A number of actions currently being considered are;
- production of joint leaflets
- advertising & road shows
- ‘one-off’ campaigns
- promotion of Neighbourhood Watch Schemes
- enhanced partnership working
It is anticipated that the DPP will focus on specific issues such as; under-age drinking, youths causing an annoyance, domestic burglary, car crime and personal safety.
The DPP in Craigavon has also formed very close links with Craigavon Community Safety Partnership in order to address these issues effectively, and to share information and best practice on all levels.
