Role of DPP

Purpose and Functions of District Policing Partnerships

The duties and responsibilities of DPPs are set out in Schedule 3 Part III (District and Community Policing Arrangements) of the Police (Northern Ireland) Act 2000.  Their role is set out in section 16 of the Act which states that DPPs functions are as follows:

·To provide views to the District Commander for any police district which is, or is included in, the district and to the Board on any matter concerning the policing of the district;

  • To monitor the performance of the police in carrying out –
    the policing plan in relation to the district; and
    the local policing plan applying to the district or any part of the district;

  • To make arrangements for obtaining –
    the views of the public about matters concerning the policing of the district; and
    the co-operation of the public with the police in preventing crime;

  • To act as a general forum for discussion and consultation on matters affecting the policing of the district; and

  • Such other functions as are conferred on it by any other statutory provision.

These functions are further expanded upon in the DPPs Code of Practice on Functions and Responsibilities Copies of which are available from the Derry DPP Office.

The DPPs are unincorporated bodies within local councils and work to give voice to community views on policing, contribute to the formulation of policing plans, monitor local police performance and co-operate in preventing crime across Northern Ireland.

The Derry District Policing Partnership (DPP) is a partnership between Derry City Council and representatives of the local community.
