Working in Partnership to Prevent Crime

A significant responsibility of the DPP is to gain the co-operation of the public with the police in preventing crime.  This involves consulting community, voluntary and statutory organisations.

The Partnership has recognised the need to concentrate on those areas of crime which impact upon the quality of life experienced by Fermanagh's residents and it is essential that limited resources are focused on key crime areas and that all opportunities are taken to work effectively with other partnerships.

Fermanagh DPP's strategy is based on 'prevention'.  The strategy requires that wider responsibility be taken for crime prevention and the emphasis is shifted from reactive 'crime control' ie utilising resources to detect the perpetrators of crime, towards 'crime prevention' aimed at preventing crime from occuring at all.

Fermanagh DPP has developed an Operational Plan for 2008/2009 which includes:

 Neighbourhood Watch

The development of Neighbourhood Watch directly impacts and contributes to the legislation requirement for the DPP to draw up a strategy for gaining the co-operation of the public with the police in preventing crime.

Together with Fermanagh Community Safety Unit and PSNI, Fermanagh DPP is responsible for promoting and supporting Neighbourhood Watch in Fermanagh.  Fermanagh currently has six chemes but the Partnership will provide help and advice in establishing Schemes across the County.

Neighbourhood Watch Schemes are community driven and provide an opportunity for a local neighbourhood to address criminality, the fear of crime and improve the local environment.

In establishing a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme it is important to canvass local residents possibly through a public meeting or community survey.  The support and encouragement of the DPP and its Members towards Neighbourhood Watch can be an extremely positive influence on the community they represent.
