Introduction and Overview of the Area

Larne, the ‘Gateway to Northern Ireland’ is situated on the east coast of the Province between the Glens of Antrim and the Antrim Plateau and is one of Ireland’s premier ferry ports.

The Borough which covers 120 sq miles has a vibrant population of 30 832 (2001 census) with a growth rate of just over 4% since 1991.  Two thirds of the population live in Larne Town and over 60 % are of working age.

Larne is the starting point of the world famous Antrim Coast Road with its 36 miles of spectacular limestone coastline including two of the fabled nine Glens of Antrim.  Two thirds of the Borough is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty.

The PSNI District Command Unit is divided into two policing sections:  Town (covering the area within Larne Town boundary) and Rural (the area outside Larne Town, from Islandmagee in the south to Garron Point in the north) and mirrors the same geographical boundaries as the Borough Council.  The Borough is served by two Police stations located in Larne Town and the coastal village of Glenarm.
