Welcome to Lisburn DPP
Lisburn or Lisnagarvey as the city was formerly known until the 1660's has as its motto "Ex Igne Resurgam" (I will arise out of the fire). This historic motto is as true today as it was when its people courageously rebuilt the town after two devastating fires in the early years. It is a powerful reminder of a dramatic past and symbolises the determination and resolve of a community which has faced difficult times and which has moved forward successfully together.
The City of Lisburn has a population of 108,694 (2001 Census) and is the largest local authority area outside Belfast. It has an economically active population which is above the Northern Ireland average with 2.2% unemployment which compares very favourably with the Northern Ireland average of 3.3%.
Lisburn City Centre has a strong retail sector and outside the City Centre a £850m mixed development of warehouse retailing at Sprucefield. Although the city is one of the most prosperous Council areas, as detailed in the Noble Report "Measures of Deprivation in Northern Ireland" there are some severe pockets of deprivation.
Lisburn continues to forge ahead towards an even more prosperous and sustainable future with new ambitions, new ideas and new approaches through partnership with the voluntary sector, local business and the community at large.
One such Partnership is The District Policing Partnership which was established by the Northern Ireland Policing Board in March 2003 and its membership includes 9 independent representatives.
Lisburn continues to "arise" to travel a road of self determination towards a better more inclusive community. It is the capital of Lagan Valley, and is a regional centre for life, work and leisure, a dynamic people looking forward together with confidence.
