Magherafelt DPP Host Policing with Young People Event
Magherafelt DPP recently welcomed more than 80 students and teachers from eight local schools to a “Policing with Young People” event. This event facilitated a discussion on policing amongst those attending. The District Commander, Chief Inspector Paul Douglas and Constable Trevor Harper outlined the work of the PSNI with regard to working with young people. This was followed a by an open question and answer session that raised some interesting and constructive points. The range of issues discussed ranged from underage drinking to allegations of police collusion. No topic was left untouched and all questions were answered.
Former Chairman Cllr Paul McLean stated “This event very successful in developing communication between the DPP and young people in the district. It highlighted an interest from the youth in how the district was policed and broke down some barriers between the police and the youth. I would thank the students, teachers, and PSNI for contributing to this highly successful event.”
Magherafelt launch New Text Service and Information Leaflet
Magherafelt District Policing Partnership has launched a new way for members of the public to communicate with it, a texting service. This allows for questions by text messages to be received by the DPP and to be put to the District Commander.
Former Chairman of Magherafelt DPP, Cllr Paul McLean, stated, “This is a new and important way to reach out to the public and to give them a quick way to put forward their views.”
The DPP also launched a new information leaflet to help highlight the new text service.
The leaflet provides information on the District Policing Partnership and how it benefits the community. It outlines the ways in which to ask questions of the DPP and PSNI.
These leaflets are available throughout the district.
Magherafelt DPP welcomes Roadsafe Roadshow
Magherafelt DPP recently welcomed the PSNI Traffic Branch Roadsafe Roadshow to the district. The roadshow, hosted by Constable John Stambridge, was attended by students from all the local schools.
Former Chairman of the Magherafelt DPP stated, “From our community surveys, dangerous driving and speeding motorists are of major concern to the local community. The opportunity to have this event in Magherafelt was very welcome. I believe it provided a valuable education tool for young drivers. From the feedback we received from students and teachers the roadsafe message did hit home.”
The event was formed part of an overall strategy by Magherafelt DPP to highlight the roadsafe message. The DPP and CSP held a Motor Madness day last year that received widespread media coverage and also more importantly attracted nearly 300 young drivers. Bus advertising also backed up this event.
