FAQ
What is a District Policing Partnership?
The Police (NI) Act 2000 provided for the setting up of District Policing Partnerships (DPPs) throughout Northern Ireland. I am pleased to be the first Chairman of the new District Policing Partnership which will give local people a real voice in local policing issues. The North Down DPP consists of some local councillors and independent members appointed by the Policing Board.
What will it do?
The role of the DPP is a consultative, explanatory and monitoring one and their main purpose is:-
- To articulate community views on the policing of their district
- To contribute to the formulation of policing plans and priorities
- To monitor police performance at local level and
- To obtain the co-operation of the public with the police in preventing crime.
How will you keep the public informed?
On your behalf we will also carry out the important monitoring role of police performance. The DPP will be holding regular public meetings to obtain the views of the public at large on policing, community safety and the fear of crime. We will publish reports and provide feed-back information to you on a regular basis.
Do the DPP's have support from the police?
We are assured of the co-operation of the Police and look forward to assisting them in providing the best possible service for all the people of North Down.
Attendance and Questions at Public Meetings of the DPP?
Members of the public are welcome to attend all public meetings of the DPP which will offer the opportunity to observe the PSNI District Commander’s response to questions posed by DPP members.
Members of the public also have a right to ask questions of the police, through the Chairman of the DPP. The process for doing this is to submit a written question to the DPP Manager who will bring the matter before the next public meeting of the DPP.
The DPP welcomes questions from any person living or working in the district or any person directly affected by the policing of the district. As far as is practical all questions received by the DPP will be presented at a public meeting, unless legal or other specific reasons prohibit their presentation to the meeting. If names and addresses are included all questions will be acknowledged and a written response provided.
To ensure that your question is tabled at a DPP meeting the written question should be received by the DPP Manager a week before a meeting. All correspondence including written questions and requests for copies of the Code of Practice should be forwarded to:
