District Commander Chief Superintendent Graham Shields, Area Commander for North Down Chief Inspector Ian McCoy and North Down District Policing Partnership Chairman, Councillor Alex Easton launched the North Down Area Policing Plan for the period 1 April 2008 to 31 March 2009 at Bangor PSNI station in April 2008.
The document, prepared in consultation with the North Down District Policing Partnership and the local Community, outlines key policing objectives for the North Down area during the incoming financial Year 2008-2009.
Chief Inspector Ian McCoy said that the last twelve months had been very challenging but also very rewarding with significant decreases in crime particularly in relation to assaults and criminal damage. He said: “The new plan will push those boundaries even further and will only be achievable with the help and support of the local community and our key partners.
“This year the plan includes drugs and we willing be focusing on those individuals who continue to ignore not only the law but also the broad community appeals to desist.
“We now have new state of the art custody facilities, we have had the new SPECS speed detection system erected on the A2 Belfast Bangor Road and this month will also see the introduction of a new call-handling facility all of which will improve our efficiency. We will continue to engage with and most importantly listen to the community so that we can ensure that our service focuses on the citizen and reflects the needs of our community.”
Chairman of North Down District Policing Partnership, Councillor Alex Easton stated
“As Chairman of North Down DPP I am please to confirm that the North Dwn Policing Plan for 2008-2009 has been developed with the full support of the DPP. Each year the DPP consults with the entire community as to their concerns on crime and policing and uses this information to agree the policing priorities with the PSNI. The DPP are confident that the concerns of the community will be addressed through this plan and consider this a true example of local people shaping local policing. The DPP will continue to monitor the local Police performance in relation to this and the Northern Irealnd plan and make North Down a safer place to live.
North Down DPP would like to thank everyone that participated in 2007 for taking time to make a difference.
In late 2007, the DPP considered this information and found that the top 6 policing priorities of the residents of North Down are as follows:
- Youths causing annoyance
- Underage
- Domestic Burglary
- Roads Policing including parking
- Anti Social Behaviour
- Criminal Damage
This information was presented to the PSNI District Commander for use in determining the targets and objectives of the Policing Plan for North Down in 2008-2009. The DPP will then monitor the District Command Units progress towards the targets contained in the plan. This ensures open and transparent policing and helps make North Down a safer place for everyone.
