Sion Mills Kids Get Cycle Training Scheme

SION KIDS CYCLE SAFELY THIS SUMMER!

01.07.08

The co-ordinators of Sion Mills Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) Scheme have successfully hosted a cycle training scheme for young people in the village.  Welcoming this scheme, NHW Co-ordinator Andy Patton says:  “The safety of the young people in Sion Mills is of utmost importance.  At this time of year children are on their summer holidays and the evenings are brighter for longer, meaning that more and more kids are out and about on their bikes.”

He continued:  “We want children to stay safe and enjoy their summer.  The young people who took part in this scheme are now aware of the dangers they may face on our roads.  Each person who took part had a full safety check on their bicycle to ensure that it was roadworthy and learned about the rules of the road.  They also learned how to manoeuvre safely, be aware of other road users and use signals and lifesavers.”

“I would like to thank the Road Safety Council for N. Ireland as well as PSNI Roads Policing Unit for delivering this training.  All the young people who took part in this scheme had the opportunity to learn about road safety and cycling in a fun environment.” he added.

This cycle training scheme was organised by Strabane District Policing Partnership (DPP), Strabane Community Safety Partnership (CSP) and Strabane PSNI.  A spokesperson on behalf of all 3 organisations stated:  “The co-ordinators of Sion Mills Neighbourhood Watch Scheme are dedicated to helping the residents in their village.  This training scheme is one way of ensuring that the young residents in Sion Mills remain safe and we are pleased to lend our support to it.  Young people face dangers on our roads on a daily basis, therefore it is important that they learn about these dangers and how to keep safe.”
